Thailand Culture

Thailand is a country situated in Southeast Asia. It borders Laos and Cambodia to the east and the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to the south. It borders the Andaman Sea and Myanmar to the west. Thailand is also known as Siam, which was the original name of the country until May 11, 1949. The word ‘THAI’ refers to ‘freedom’. This is the only country in Southeast Asia that has been independent since the 13th century. Thailand has a population of close to 62 million people. There are many mountains in the northern part of Thailand and limestone islands in the southern region.  Dense jungles and green field are seen just about anywhere in this beautiful and historically rich country.

Many Thais believe in Buddhism. Islam prevails in areas in the southernmost parts of Thailand. Ethnic Chinese also form a part of the Thai society, especially in and around the capital city of Bangkok.

A noteworthy aspect of the culture in Thailand is that ancestors are greatly respected and a lot of charity is offered to Buddhist monks. Thais have a lot of respect for the elderly and bow down to the feet of their parents, grandparents and elders. They also have a strong sense of courteousness and warmth in them.

Thai boxing is considered to be the national sport of Thailand. It has gained popularity all over the world. Thais have a special way of greeting their guests, which is a prayer like gesture known as ‘Wai’. They usually avoid touching anyone’s head or pointing with their feet as such gestures are considered to be taboos in the Thai culture. They are very careful people and do not step over someone or over food. Thais do not slide books or papers over the desk as they are considered to be valued objects. Thai culture overall is an interesting mix of tradition, oriental values and Buddhism.
